Just before 8:30 a.m., a Philadelphia police officer tried stopping a vehicle driving erratically near the Girard Avenue exit on the southbound side, police said.

Another officer arrived for backup as the man drew his semiautomatic handgun and placed it to his own head, police said.

SWAT and Crisis Intervention Trained (CIT) Officers arrived on the scene, closing the highway in both directions.

At one point, the man, still armed, briefly entered the captain's parked car and eventually got out with the gun that he again pointed at his own head, police said. The man then alternated between running and walking southbound on the highway. Responding officers contained the male while utilizing cover.

After approximately 20 minutes, officers were able to convince the man to drop his weapon, and he was taken into custody.

Preliminarily, the man appears to be in crisis, and will be transported to an area hospital for a mental health evaluation, according to police. No injuries to police or civilians were reported.
